3 Ways To Prevent Acne Breakouts

We have all experienced the occasional breakout here and there. They are not fun and can often come at the worst times! There are many different reasons why one would get an acne breakout, but the main culprit and root cause of all acne is the excess of bacteria in our skin. Knowing this alone makes it important to keep our skin cleansed at all times which can prevent many acne breakouts. Here are three ways that you can help prevent acne.

1. Remove Makeup & Cleanse Skin Every Night

This is probably the most effective way to prevent acne. It’s important to remove all the impurities that build up on our skin throughout the day such as pollution, dirt & oil. These impurities must be removed every night to prevent bacteria building up and clogging pores. It’s even more important that if you wear makeup that you first remove your makeup and then do an overall cleanse of your skin. Leaving your makeup on over night is one of the worst things you can do for your skins health.  It leaves a layer of dead skin and increases the rate at which bacteria grows, this does not allow for proper skin regeneration over night. Using  gentle natural based cleansers are recommended. They will not dry out your skin yet effectively removes makeup and impurities while nourishing your skin and not cause dehydration. Natural oils like jojoba and coconut oil are great for removing makeup. You can also find effective natural and non toxic cleansers here.

2. Clean Your Makeup Brushes

If you wear makeup regularly and are using makeup brushes to apply it, you must clean your makeup brushes at least once a week to prevent acne and potential skin infections. Every professional makeup artist knows to do this to prevent spreading germs from client to client. Bacteria easily build up on makeup brushes due to the accumulation of oils, dead skin and makeup residues. This is an area that is often overlooked but can be a huge game changer if you have acne prone skin. The longer you leave your brushes without cleaning your brushes, the more bacteria grows on the brushes and gets transferred onto your skin every time you apply your makeup. The best way to clean your brushes is by using mild cleansers like natural unscented castile soap or natural baby shampoo. Do not use harsh detergents or soaps as they will damage the bristles. Take all your brushes, wet them down and put a small dab of cleanser on every brush and individually cleanse. Rinse them until all traces of makeup is removed. When done lay them flat overnight on a clean towel or cloth. You want to regularly use new brushes every 1-2 years depending on the condition that they are in and how well you cleanse them.

3. Wash Bedding & Switch to Silk/Satin Pillow Cases

Our bedding can be one of the places we don’t think can contribute to our acne, but if you’re not regularly washing your pillow cases and sheets it can be a breeding ground for bacteria. As we sleep, we perspire and leave that on our pillow cases along with dead skin cells and oils from our hair. Every single night that you lay your head down you add more bacteria to the bedding and your face directly is exposed to that bacteria. This is why it is also important to go to bed with cleansed skin, but even more so to regularly wash and change your bedding. Cotton absorbs oils and it stays there which is why if you’re using cotton, it is suggested more frequently. Wash your bedding at least once a week and try not to share pillow cases with others in the household if possible. Lots of women and men have switched to using silk and satin pillow cases because it is more comfortable but also because it is healthier for you hair and skin. It doesn’t have the same absorption factor as cotton so it is a more hygienic choice for bedding. That being said, it still has to be washed weekly.

These simple steps can help diminish the frequency of your acne breakouts and maintain healthier skin. Adding proper hygiene habits to your beauty routine is essential and will make a big difference!

Vitamin C For Healthy Skin

There’s has been so much research done to demonstrate the positive effects of Vitamin C on the skin. Many advanced skincare treatments and lines include Vitamin C serums to combat and prevent the signs of aging.  The powerful antioxidant and regenerative properties help to diminish fine lines and beautifully brightens the complexion.

Although it is ideal to include Vitamin C in your actual skincare, it is even more effective when it is coupled by consuming Vitamin C in your diet. The benefits of Vitamin C for your overall health are incredible and when taken regularly your skin receives more of its benefits. The best type of to have on a regular basis is a natural source vs the synthetic ascorbic acid. Unfortunately ascorbic acid can be damaging to healthy gut flora and does not contain the hundreds of additional micro nutrients that natural food sources contain.

Vitamic C sources from superfoods like the Camu Camu berry not only provide mega doses which supports a healthy immune system, but they also contain unique blends of nutrients, vitamins, amino acids and anti inflammatory properties.  This berry contains the highest levels of Vitamin C known in the natural world! It is very popular in its native south america and can be consumed in powder form for smoothies and juice blends.

Here are the benefits to your skin from having Vitamin C as a part of your skincare regimen and diet

Sun Protection All Year Long

As the summer season winds down, many people will think that its time to put away the sunscreen and sun protection away because fall is upon us. Although the temperature will cool down in many places and the rain will start to pour in the following months, protecting your skin from the harmful effects of the UVA/UVB rays is still required.

The effects of sun damage may be more acute in the summer months with the dangers of sun burn, but UVA/UVB rays will always penetrate clouds throughout the fall & winter months causing more long term effects like the aging of your skin.

There are many people who take Holidays throughout the winter as well and as their summer tans have faded, they are more vulnerable to sun burns which is an indication of deeper damage to cells in the skin. It is recommended to wear a layer of sunscreen or a cosmetic product with at least SPF 20 on your face and neck area which are left  more exposed in the winter months.  Sun damage is th number one cause of premature aging skin, wrinkles, sun spots and loss of moisture.

Today there are beautiful options that offer a safer alternative to protect your skin. Mineral based sunscreens like zinc oxide are physical barriers to UVA/UVB rays. Common conventional  sunscreens sold use chemical blockers that have been found to be carcinogenic, sunspots and can cause irritation. These include oxybenzone , octinoxate and avobenzone. It is best to opt for more natural mineral based sun products when they are effective without the risks of side effects. Most zinc oxide based formulations will also come with accompanying antioxidant nourishing ingredients like Vitamins and natural oils.

Castor Oil For Longer Lashes

Having healthy long lashes has always been something that instantly brightens up the eyes and creates a refreshed look. There are countless mascaras that promise the illusion and even lash extension that will actually lengthen them. The problem with that is that both of those are only temporary fixes and do not actually strengthen or thicken your natural lashes permanently.

Recently there have been quite a few articles written by professionals in the medical field and beauty industry who have warned women about the risks associated with prolonged use of lash extensions due to the toxic ingredients often found in the adhesive. There are also many lash serums on the market lately that have also claimed to grow lashes, but the downside to many of these serums is that there are potential risks as well as they also contain some chemicals that can cause reactions such as allergies or even ocular damage.

Fortunately there is a very simple and natural alternative to enhance the length of your lashes and it has been used for decades with thousands of testimonials of it working very well. This simple remedy is CASTOR OIL! The oil is obtained by pressing the oil of the castor seeds as seen in the picture.

BENEFITS OF CASTOR OIL FOR LASHES

Castor oil is very beneficial as it has a multitude of properties and nutrients. It is very rich in Vitamin E and fatty acids which hydrates and nourishes the lashes which both prevents breakage and enhances the lash growth cycle.  Other benefits are that it is antibacterial and anti inflammatory which is very important in order to support a healthy environment for lash growth. The nutrients found in castor oil have the ability to penetrate deeply into the skin and follicles which is a contributing factor to its effectiveness.

The best kind of Castor oil to use is the cold pressed hexane free and paraben free kind. This eliminates unnecessary toxins and maximizes potency of the product. There are some people who use the Jamaican Black castor oil, but be advised that this sometimes causes a bit more irritation in some people as it is not filtered in the same way.

HOW TO USE CASTOR OIL FOR LASHES

The key to seeing results is consistency. You must apply it every night before bed for at least a couple weeks in order to see results. If you follow the directions given below you should see results within a few weeks.

STEP 1- Wash face to remove all traces of cosmetics and makeup especially from your eyes.

STEP 2- With a q-tip or eyeliner brush gently dip it into the castor oil ensuring that it is not too much.

STEP 3- With the help of the brush or q-tip apply to the upper and lower lash line.

**TIP** If you have a spooly brush/cleaned mascara wand you can apply a sparing amount of oil on the clean spooly brush and apply to the lashes as well. LESS IS MORE!

STEP 4- Leave it on overnight and remove in the morning with a gentle cleanser before applying makeup.

Every individual will have a slightly different timing seeing results, but as long as you do it consistently you will see your lashes become healthier. Some women will use a small amount to enhance brows as well. Please note that for oilier skin types this may create excess oiliness and clog pores, so please use just small amounts.

Have fun growing your lashes and let us know how you liked your results!

Chocolate Chip Gluten Free Cookies

Who doesn’t like a great chocolate chip cookie right! I absolutely love them and have since I was a kid, I could easily eat about half a dozen in one serving back in the day!

This particular recipe for delicious chocolate chip cookies is gluten free. One way to make gluten free living easier is to have enough tasty alternatives so that you’re not left with wheat cravings. Gluten has become an issue for thousands of people who suffer with celiac disease and for people who have gluten intolerance/sensitivity. There are dozens of  symptoms ranging from head ache, bloating, rashes, cognitive dysfunction and allergies. In general although you may not feel sick after eating pasta or bread, gluten is not recommended to have in large amounts due to the inflammatory effects it has in the body, and for general gut and brain health for both short and long term. This is due to the fact that wheat has been drastically modified in the last century in modern day agricultural processes and practices. The wheat your grandmother ate as a child is not the same wheat we are eating today and unfortunately because of the abundance of wheat in our diet, we overly consume it and our bodies are just not adapted to break down this modern day wheat.

I will admit that it took me some trial and error to get this recipe just right in order to have a nice soft cookie that would not crumble too much, I prefer soft versus crunchy cookies. There are a lot of gluten free recipe’s online for gluten free chocolate chip cookies, but a lot of them use tapioca starch and other not so healthy flour options. The whole reason I am going gluten free is for my health, and NOT all gluten free options are healthy, as a matter of fact many of them have higher glycemic index’s than traditional wheat choices.

After about 4 attempts I finally have an awesome gluten free chocolate chip cookie recipe that is both delicious and simple to make.

Here is the recipe and instructions below to make a dozen small to medium sized healthy and DELICIOUS Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Cookies. ENJOY!

Avocado– This fruit contains close to 20 beneficial nutrients including Vitamins A, K, B6, C, E , Copper, Potassium, Folic Acid and protein. It is very rich in mono saturated healthy fats which supports the heart, brain, liver, and of course skin and hair. Due to it’s high carotenoid content in the dark green flesh, it is a powerful antioxidant and anti inflammatory for the entire body. It helps to soothe and heal the skin after prolonged sun exposure. It has been used for beautifying the skin and hair in many cultures around the world.

Organic Yogurt- Considered a super food by many because of it’s nutritious Vitamin and mineral content. It helps maintain healthy gut flora and immune system because of its probiotic cultures. The properties most beneficial for the skin are Zinc, Lactic Acid, Calcium and Vitamin B’s. Zinc is a powerful anti inflammatory. It has been shown to help with the swelling and redness caused by acne, act as mild astringent to tighten pores and helps regulate oil production in sebaceous glands reducing breakouts. The Lactic Acid is another key ingredient that helps to smooth rough skin and mildly exfoliate dead skin cells off. Lactic Acid is also very effective in reducing existing wrinkles and slowing down the formation of new ones. Our skin’s upper most layer contains lots of calcium! It not only strengthens the skin but acts as an antioxidant and aids in essential healthy cell renewal. Yogurt has many Vitamin B’s like B5 and B2 otherwise known as Riboflavin. This helps cell regeneration and growth and protects the cells from free radical damage.

Raw Organic Honey- This sweet and delicious food has been used for thousands of years to keep skin beautiful. The unpasteurized kind is recommended as it contains all the available nutrients and over 5000 active enzymes for the best results.

It contains minerals such as
Potassium, Magnesium, Iron and Phosphate and has powerful natural anti fungal and antibacterial properties known to be effective against over 60 strains of bacteria. For this reason it’s great for cleansing and clarifying pores as it opens them up, unleashing trapped dirt and bacteria. Used by many people for effectively yet gently treating and preventing current and future acne breakouts. Honey is also full of antioxidants that are shown to be anti-aging. It is very moisturizing to the skin and helps maintain a smooth, glowing complexion. There’s a reason why Cleopatra used honey to keep her skin pristine!

Benefits of Dry Body Brushing

Having smooth skin on our bodies that is supple and soft is a sign of good health and is not as difficult to achieve as we think. Our skin is the largest organ of our body and when we have a balanced lifestyle our skin reflects that by having a smooth texture, but even the healthiest of people can still have problem areas that can have cellulite and roughness. Brushes can be found in health food stores and are very affordable.

Dry body brushing is a wonderful tool we can use to help promote health and vibrant skin and is very easy to use.

What Is Dry Body Brushing?

Dry Body Brushing is a technique that has been used for many years all over the world to promote healthier more vibrant skin. It is a popular technique also used in spas. Our body naturally detoxifies itself but with our modern day life styles sometime that natural process can become sluggish resulting in various side effects from mood swings to dimply skin called cellulite. Dry body brushing is a perfect way to address these conditions naturally and effectively.

What are the benefits of body brushing?

1) Stimulates the lymphatic system.

Your lymphatic system is responsible for eliminating toxins and waste. The lymphatic system when working properly transfers the waste to the blood stream to be drained out, this is called lymphatic drainage. When the body’s lymphatic system is not functioning optimally, waste can build up and create health conditions and accumulate in fat deposits. By stimulating the lymphatic system you are aiding the release of toxins which makes body brushing a great detoxification method.

2) Exfoliate Dead Skin Cells

Dry body brushing helps slough off dead skin cells that can build up over time. When your skin is cleared of dead skin cells it reveals the newer and smoother skin below. It maintains a youthful glow and appearance by also removing excess dirt oil and impurities. Your pores are open and can properly breath. It also preps your skin and pores to fully absorb your body oils and lotions used after the shower.

3) Reduces the appearance of cellulite

Regularly stimulating by dry brushing can help soften hard fat deposits and help to redistribute the fat more evenly throughout the body. The detoxification of waste that occurs while brushing also helps to strengthen the connective tissue, which tends to break down with lack of stimulation and regular proper detox.  The appearance of smoother, firmer less dimpled skin is a result of the regular practice of stimulation as the fatty deposits are constantly being manipulated and flushed.

4) Increases Circulation

Dry brushing increases circulation to your skin which regenerates your skin.  Nutrients and healthy oxygenation is brought to your skin cells. Without proper circulation in our body waste remains stagnant and our cells are deprived of vital nourishment.

5) Energizing and revitalizing

When this is done first thing in the morning because it is stimulating to the nervous system it helps to kick start you day and definitely energizes your body! The sensation is very invigorating and revitalizes you for the day. It may take a few days to get used to the feeling but after a few times you will learn to LOVE it!

How do you properly use a body brush?

It is best to start at your feet and work your way up your body in long strokes. Below is a graphic to show you the proper technique for the best results. It is best to always move towards your heart for elimination of toxins and to go with the natural blood flow.
